Health Education Curriculum

The purpose of this Learning Experience (LE) is for students to gain an understanding of conflict in relationships – 1) that it is inevitable and 2) a part of relating to others – and to provide students with ways to manage and resolve conflict (if possible).  The  LE explores conflict and communication through the context of the parent-child relationship using fictional family TV dramas with the goal of improving communication and problem-solving skills.

The Learning Experience includes:

  • A Document Based Questionnaire (DBQ) with scaffolding questions to lead the student to an understanding of conflict and then to the skills necessary to manage conflict.
  • Fictional Family TV Drama Conflict Scenarios to be used by students to write a “script”  of the drama’s final episode resolving their family’s conflict.
  • The Students’ Presentation of their Family TV Drama’s Final Episode
  • A Student Reflection on what they learned and
  • A Student Self-Assessment Rubric

Student Packet includes:

  • A description of the project
  • A 4-day planner checklist
  • Fictional “Network Television Scriptwriters for Family Drama Series” task:
    • Write a script for the scene of the Final Episode™ of the series centering around conflict between a parent and child that concludes with a peaceful solution or resolution.  Cliff-hangers are not allowed.
  • Present your Scriptwriters Scenario and
  • Script Template
